MINISTRY FOR CULTURAL TREASURES AND ACTIVITIES
DARC - Direzione Generale per l'architettura e l'arte contemporanea
Piazza del Popolo, 18 - 00187 Rome, Italy
Web-site: www.darc.beniculturali.it
General Director: Pio Baldi
DARC was created in May of 2001 and promotes contemporary artistic creativity, in support of the traditional activities of the Ministry in the sectors of protection and restoration of the ancient. Joining protection and conservation to the contemporary project means undoing the deeply-rooted reassuring presuppositions that "conservation" is equivalent to "quality"; it means, therefore, recognising the unfeasibility of the conservation/contemporary juxtaposition,
and searching for "quality" in any form of design or planning which may not be contemporary. The new director's task is, therefore, demanding and fundamental to the development of Italian architecture.

the 20th century. The exhibition on Italian Architecture "From Futurism to a Possible Future" and the competition open to young Italian and Japanese architects for "Piazza Italia in Giappone 2001" will conclude this year of cultural exchange.
